Our Heritage
A Story Born in the Port of Kobe
Our story began with the restoration and resale of Western furniture brought to Kobe. In those early days, Japanese shipwrights — craftsmen who once built wooden boats — joined our workshop. By taking imported furniture apart and carefully reconstructing it, they learned the art of Western furniture-making.
Over 150 years later, we continue to bring together Western design and Japanese craftsmanship, from woodworking and hand carving to upholstery and finishing.
Each piece is made not only to be admired, but to be lived with and enjoyed for generations.

A Chair Made to Fit You

My Chair Comfort is a collection of personal chairs, individually made to fit your body. Through a fitting process that considers five key elements, including backrest height, armrest height, seat depth, seat width and seat height, each chair is tailored to your individual comfort.
Urushi Dining
Where Two Japanese Traditions Meet
Created in collaboration with MAKINO URUSHI DESIGN, this dining collection combines traditional Western-style furniture craftsmanship with the Japanese art of urushi lacquer.
The distinctive "Ocean" finish uses aluminium leaf and layers of lacquer to create a richly textured surface that reflects light in remarkable ways.

Sofas
Crafted for Comfort and Character
R,NAGATA sofas combine traditional woodworking, carefully constructed upholstery and distinctive fabrics to create furniture of lasting character.
Our flagship Genkotsu Sofa, originally designed in 1971, exemplifies this approach. Its sculpted oak frame, hand-carved acanthus details and traditional upholstery techniques bring together the beauty of craftsmanship and the comfort of everyday living.
